Publish Date : 28-Nov-2011

So far, Africa Development Bank (AfDB) has funded 12 projects worth US$ 340 million and presently has four active projects in the water and sanitation sector in Zambia, stated Sering Jallow, director of the Water and Sanitation department.

Also director of the Africa Water Facility, Mr Jallow stated that the group started its operations in Zambia in 1971 and till now has invested over US$1 billion in all sectors of the economy.

According to him, a US$23.7 million loan is to be provided by the bank for supporting the implementation of the National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (NRWSSP) initiated in 2005 which aims at expanding access to safe, reliable and convenient supply of water from 37 percent to 55 percent of the rural population by 2010. Even expanding access to adequate sanitation from 13 percent to 33 percent forms main part of this programme.

The bank is also assisting the Nkana Water and Sewerage Company. It is a part of a water and sanitation project which is likely to benefit 474,000 people, mainly from Kitwe, Kalulushi and Chambishi area.

The total cost of the project is likely to be around US$61.3 million. Bank’s contribution towards the project would be of 90.2 percent of the total cost, which stands at US$ 55.3 million.

Sering Jallow said, “The bank is providing financing of US$34.8 million for the improvement of the quality and delivery of water supply and sanitation services in eight project centres in Central Province, that is Chibombo, Chisamba, Kabwe, Kapiri-Mposhi, Mkushi, Mumbwa, Nampundwe and Serenje, expected to benefit over 273 000 people.”
