Publish Date : 08-Dec-2011
General Electric has been awarded a contract worth around $300 million from Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) for the expansion of six simple-cycle power plants at Wadi Al Dwasir, Tabuk, Qurrayat, Sharura, Ala-Wajh and Najran.
Under the contract, GE will offer 13 gas turbines and associated services to plants throughout the country by adding up to 800MW of power to the Kingdom’s grid by the summer of 2013 and will also render training in the operation and maintenance of the turbines to SEC engineers as part of its knowledge sharing initiative in the Kingdom.
GE will manufacture the turbines at its factory in Greenville, South Caroline and then supply it to different over the Q4 of 2012 and the Q1 of 2013.
The company noted that plants are expected to start commercial operation in May 2013 in a move to satisfy the peak summer demand.
Ali Saleh Al Barrack, president and CEO of SEC said, “The expansion projects are part of our overall strategy to add an average of 4,000MW of power annually to the grid in Saudi Arabia as we continue to face a growing demand for reliable electricity.”
