The contract, awarded by the Air Force, exercises an option under a previously negotiated contract for Boeing to produce, process, launch and activate a ninth WGS satellite. It runs through May 2013 and has firm, fixed-price terms.

The Air Force plans to launch the fourth WGS satellite, also built by Boeing, from Cape Canaveral next week.

In addition, the Air Force is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding next week with the governments of Canada, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Australia, which will expand the existing international partnership with Australia on the WGS satellites.

Under the program, the countries will contribute to of new satellites in exchange for access to their communications capabilities.
