HAITI : $5.6 million for Haiti reconstruction

Publish Date : 31-Jan-2012

A project of Development and Peace will be providing new permanent houses at the earliest to around 450 families in Petit Boucan, an isolated mountainous area from the region of Gressier, whose houses and properties are devastated completely in the earthquake of January 12, 2010.

The houses will be provided for people recognized as most vulnerable in the community, like the aged and single parents.
The project is implemented in collaboration with the Institute of Animation and Technology (ITECA), a Haitian partner of Development and Peace since 1988. ITECA has activated the community through discussions and guaranteed the engagement of the population in the design of houses, which will benefit the sustainability of the project.

The design of houses are carried out by an architectural firm ACDF of Quebec. The houses will be constructed as per the earthquake standards, hurricane resistant and provisions to collect rain water and latrines. Training will be given to the community members by the ACDF so as to lend hand in the construction.

The project is initiated with the financial backup from the Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for a contribution of 4,997,436 dollars and that of Development and Peace of 1,645,500 dollars.

The project is expected to be over towards the end of 2012.
