Publish Date : 04-Feb-2012

Saudi Arabia has sanctioned a railway project which aims at connecting Bahrain and the other GCC countries through a 2,117km network.

The project worth around $25 billion, will see trains running at speeds of up to 350km/hr. This project is expected to enhance regional travel as well as trade relations between the six countries.

Starting from Kuwait, the rail link will pass by the eastern Saudi city of Dammam, and will connect with Bahrain with a bridge running parallel to King Fahad Causeway so as to reach Qatar through Salwa.

One more line is for connecting the kingdom with the UAE through Bathaa. Further, the railway line is designed to run through Abu Dhabi and Al Ain for reaching Oman via Sahar and Muscat, and connect Qatar and Bahrain through a bridge.

The project requires land which is likely to cost around $3.1 billion. Acquiring of locomotives is expected to cost approximately $1.8 billion.

Work on the project is scheduled to commence during this year once engineering study is concluded.
