Publish Date : 14-Feb-2012
South Africa will be constructing a pharmaceutical unit for the production of ingredients for antiretroviral medicines, used in the treatment of HIV and Aids, with an investment of $205m. Construction of the plans will be carried out near Pelindaba in Gauteng.
The plant is a joint venture between the SA government, through Pelchem, and Lonza.
The joint venture named Ketlaphela is expected to come online in 2016 and would create around 2600 jobs. It hopefully would ensure the supply of priority drugs, and will also help in stabilising the price.
Presently, the APIs needed to manufacture antiretrovirals are been imported by South Africa.
According to Naledi Pandor, Science Minister, Ketlaphela - the joint venture would construct the first pharmaceutical unit - for producing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for antiretroviral medicines in South Africa.
