GEORGIA,UNITED STATES : GEFA awards $1.8 million water line loan to UPSON COUNTY

Publish Date : 28-Feb-2012

The Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) awards $1.8 million in the form of a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) to Upson County for work in the Northside area of the county’s water system.

The loan is for 20 years and Upson County will pay 1.13% interest on the $1,800,000, which comprises principal forgiveness of around $500,000 if all loan funds are drawn. The county also secured a 1% interest rate reduction because the project will support conserve water.

The county will be using the loan to replace old water mains, conduct leak detection and repair and replace current water meters with an automatic meter reading system which will enable more efficient readings. The Northside section is the oldest portion of the county’s water system and the majority of the area that will be affected will be between Highway 19, Atwater Road and Jeff Davis Road.

“The goal of this project is to provide existing customers with better water flow and pressure. It should also help to reduce our overhead cost since we will be repairing leaks in the system,” said County Manager Kyle Hood.

It is estimated that the project will start in summer 2012.

“The DWSRF provides communities throughout Georgia with low-interest loans to fund water infrastructure projects that deliver safe, affordable drinking water. Eligible projects include a wide variety of public health or compliance related water supply projects. The program guidelines also allow funding for ‘green’ projects such as energy efficiency at water facilities, and water efficiency projects. DWSRF projects conserve and improve water resources, and facilitate economic growth and development,” said GEFA Executive Director Kevin Clark.

Hood also gave thanks to Mike Lott of Rent-McDuff, who has been critical to the engineering of the project, and Danny Johnson, Water Superintendent, for all of the hard work they have put in on the project.
