Publish Date : 05-Jan-2018

Indian engineering company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has offered a contract worth over EUR 100 million to CAF to provide Urbos trams for the Mauritius Metro project.

The deal will see CAF building 18 bi-directional trams for the 26km light rail system. They will be fully low-floor made up of seven modules each.

The contract scope also requires to supply signalling systems, an automatic vehicle location system, a transit signal priority system, depot equipment and a driving simulator.

L&T had received the contract from the state-owned agency Metro Express to design and build the light rail system in July, 2017, on the African island of Mauritius.

The route links 5 major cities in Mauritius: Curepipe, Vacoas, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and the capital Port Louis, with 19 stations two of which will be elevated.

The project was slated for completion within 4 years, with the first phase of 13km to be completed within 24 months.

The investment in the light rail system said to be around 450 million forms part of the countrys ongoing policy to upgrade transport infrastructure.

The project is being financed through a grant from Indias government.
