Namibia : Namibian Govt. to receive AfDB loan for Kranzberg - Walvis Bay upgrade

Publish Date : 31-Jan-2018

The African Development Bank has announced it will offer a Rand 2bn ($US 167m) loan to the Namibian government to fund upgrading of TransNamibs Kranzberg - Walvis Bay line, along with the project to build a new highway between the capital Windhoek and the citys airport.

The 211.8km line from Kranzberg to the port of Walvis Bay is a major trade route for not only Namibia but also other Southern African Development Community countries.

But, the line has not seen any significant upgrade since the 1960s and traffic is hindered by speed limits, leading to increased transport costs.

The project will require to replace all rails and sleepers, recondition ballast, replace manually-operated switches with automatic switches, repair and maintenance of culverts, and replace three steel bridges. The maximum axleload will also be raised to 18.5 tonnes.

The work will be carried out from 2019 and 2021, raising the maximum line speed to 80km/h for freight trains and 100km/h for passenger trains.
