The South Moravia regional government has initiated a competitive tendering process to choose the future operator of all subsidised train services in the region, surrounding the countrys second city of Brno.

The 5-year contract would begin on 1st January, 2020, when the existing 10-year deal with national operator CD will end.

Bids for the deal with an estimated value of KC56bn are to be filed by the end of February. Price will be assigned a 77% weighting in assessment of the bids. Other criteria will include the type of rolling stock used, with low-floor entrances, air-conditioning and free wi-fi considered desirable.

Bidders must have run at least 1 million train-km in the las 3 years, a requirement which is fulfilled by all the major local operators including RegioJet, LEO Express, Arriva and GWTR.

The operator will be required to secure rolling stock for all of the services except suburban routes S2. KrenoviceBrnoBlanskoBrezova nad Svitavou and S3 NhovTisnovBrnoBreclav, where the regional government plans to buy 36 new EMUs using KC55bn of financing from the EUs Operational Programme Transport 2.
