Dr. Nasr: "The project contributes to improving agricultural production and affects food security Agricultural development is a priority for Egypt".

Egypt signed the agreement for the second phase of the Irrigation Pumping Stations Rehabilitation Project worth USD 53.2 million with the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID). The agreement was signed by the Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Dr. Sahar Nasr, on the sidelines of her participation at the WB's Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., and OFID's Chairman Mr. Suleiman J. Al-Herbish, in presence of Egypt's Ambassador to Washington Mr. Yasser Reda.

The Minister mentioned that the project aimed to improve the provision of irrigation water, enhance sustainable management of water resources in the project area, improve agricultural production, replace and modernize 6 pumping stations, and procure and install Electro-mechanical equipment to ten pumping stations. The Mechanics and Electricity Department at the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is expected to benefit from the project.

Moreover, the Minister commended the implementation of the first phase of the Irrigation Pumping Stations Project to which MIIC secured USD 30 million from OFID in order to replace 10 pumping stations and procure spare parts for them, procure 10 cleaning machines, and establish 10 movable labs.

MIIC's keenness on cooperating with OFIC in projects that affect citizens' lives including this project that affects food security, contributes to improving standards of living and provides youth and women with job opportunities was emphasized, noting that the agricultural development was a priority for Egypt and referring to the 1.5 million feddan and silos projects to which OFID can contribute.

"We feel the progress taking place between Egypt and OFID and the Egyptian government's credibility among the people with regard to projects that affect their lives and provide them with job opportunities," stated Mr. Al-Herbish.

"OFID's projects in Egypt are in progress and we look forward to supporting the Silos Project," he added, explaining that the volume of cooperation between Egypt and OFID was approximately USD 641 million in the fields of health, education, water services, energy, and agriculture. He also reiterated OFID's interest in supporting Egypt in various areas.

It is worth noting that OFID was established in 1976 through the petroleum exporting countries; it helps developing countries in the fields of food, clean energy, water, sanitation, healthcare, and education to encourage self-dependence.
