United Kingdom : Bam Nuttall inks Ł2 million contract for Borders railway route

Publish Date : 29-Mar-2012

Bam Nuttall has inked Ł2 million contract to develop initial designs to reopen Borders railway route from Edinburgh to Tweedbank.

As per the contract, Bam Nuttall will have an option to build the railway, bringing trains to the Borders for the first time since 1969. Bam Nuttall was the sole bidder for the project after first Balfour Beatty and then Carillion pulled out due to concerns regarding the funding model. Bam Nuttall will design 35-mile railway route, with bridges, tunnels and stations. It is planning to build a total of seven new stations.

The route, which was due to be reopened in 2014 following a gap of 45 years, was to be constructed with a non-profit distributing approach, untried on the railways. This resulted Transport Scotland to finance the project, which will now be operated by Network Rail.

“This contract to deliver the design phase takes us and the Scottish Government one step closer to re-establishing a railway to the Scottish Borders,” said David Simpson, route managing director for Network Rail Scotland.

“This is an important project for the region and will help secure jobs and provide opportunities for communities along the route,” said Transport Minister Keith Brown.
