the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment and Minister Responsible for the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB), attended the official opening of Heberts Recycling Inc.s new recycling plant. Minister Parsons was joined by Kevin Sargent, CEO of Heberts Recycling Inc., and officials from the MMSB for a tour and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the launch of the large private-sector facility in Mount Pearl.
Heberts Recycling Inc. developed the new processing plant after being awarded a contract with the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board to purchase all of its plastics. Through its strategic investment in new technology and a new plant, the company changed the way containers are collected, baled, and processed in Newfoundland and Labrador. The new process has led to the creation six new jobs and allows products to be produced in the province providing environmental and economic benefits to residents.
The innovative technology and new location enables the company to process 78 million plastic containers annually and sell them to global companies which specialize in manufacturing rigid and flexible packaging for the pharmaceutical, medical device, food, and beverage markets. Through the use of state-of-the-art equipment that includes conveyors, electro-magnetic technology, granulators, air powered elutriation systems and various line sorters, the plant removes impurities and contamination and then grinds it into flake. The plant generates material at 99.1% purity, which attracts better prices in post-consumer commodities markets.
Over the past 20 years, more than 2.6 billion beverage containers have been recycled in Newfoundland and Labrador. Last year, the MMSBs Beverage Container Recycling program kept 180 million containers out of landfills, extending the lives of those landfills, protecting the natural landscape and conserving natural resources.
