The country has taken up the challenge of promoting the scope of the Escazu Agreement as part of the priorities of the Costa Rican Presidency of the OAS Permanent Council, and in this regard, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship, Lorena Aguilar Revelo, was the keynote speaker at the extraordinary meeting of August 22, 2018, convened by the ambassador Rita Hernndez Bolaos, under the slogan "The links of human rights and the environment: the experience of the Escaz Agreement."
The panel was made up of experts from ECLAC, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the OAS, who enriched the dialogue on the protection of human rights and the environment, and also presented concrete cases in the region.
Vice Chancellor Aguilar highlighted the importance of a healthy and ecologically balanced environment for the enjoyment of human rights, as well as the importance of the evolution of human rights and its impact on progress towards more open, transparent and participatory societies.
In addition, he placed special emphasis on "the face of a woman that contains the reprehensible situation of environmental activists, who represent a high percentage of deaths and are also at the forefront of the struggle for sustainable, fair and equitable development in our country. region".
He also announced that the Government of Costa Rica will begin preparations for the early entry into force of the Escaz Agreement, even before the ratification of the instrument, and urged the OAS Member States to join this Agreement. The Escaz Agreement will be opened for the signature of the States on September 27, 2018 at the United Nations, New York.
The special session allowed for an in-depth dialogue and reflection among the member states on the relevant instruments and mechanisms in the field of human rights and the environment.
