The municipality of Amsterdam has selected Greenchoice as a new energy supplier for the next 15 years following a tendering process. The signing of the supply agreement for sustainable electricity took place on Tuesday 25 September. With this contract the municipality encourages the construction of windmills in the Netherlands.

Rutger Groot Wassink, alderman for purchasing: "The entire electricity consumption of the municipality and participating parties such as Amsterdam-Amstelland Fire Department, Afval Energie Bedrijf, the Stedelijk Museum, the Amsterdam Public Library and the National Opera and Ballet will be generated sustainably. Over the next fifteen years, we will work together at least every five years on a sustainable project with the aim of sustainably generating, storing or saving electricity."

Collectively, the participating parties use around 122 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, equivalent to around 36,000 households. The electricity that is purchased is generated sustainably and comes from the Netherlands. Initially via wind, sun or biomass. Part of the agreement is the agreement (obligation) that the total capacity that the municipal organization uses within seven years is generated by wind turbines that will be built for this purpose in the coming years. In this way the municipality makes a real contribution to the energy transition from fossil to sustainable: all electricity is supplied with modern wind turbines that have been put into use after 1 January 2019.

With this supply agreement, the municipality of Amsterdam is contributing to the energy transition from fossil to sustainable and hopes to be an example for other government institutions that want to purchase sustainable energy. Evert den Boer, General Manager Greenchoice: "We look forward with pride to the cooperation with the municipality of Amsterdam. With the choice for Greenchoice, the municipality consciously opts for green electricity from the Netherlands and accelerating the energy transition. They are thus a wonderful example for other municipalities."
