Austria is a small European country in terms of gross domestic product, area, and population. Yet, Austria is a well developed, prosperous country with high quality of life. It has achieved a remarkable record of growth, even when international conditions have not been at their most favorable. The country has a strong economic infrastructure with well developed industry, banking, transportation, services, and commercial facilities. Membership in the EU has drawn an influx of foreign investors attracted by Austria's access to the single European market and proximity to EU aspirant. The country also has deposits of crude oil and salt, and is rich in hydroelectric power. Austria exports iron and steel, wood, motors and its components, paper and cardboard, synthetic materials and fibers, machinery, electricity, and chemical products. The main trading partners are Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and the United States.
