Macedonia during its independence in 1991 was the least developed of the Yugoslav republics. After a turbulent economic phase till 2003, the economy expanded at a growth rate of 5.1% in 2007. Agriculture and industry are the two primary fields of Macedonian economy. The economy Macedonia encourages an open market; as a result of which there has been a boost in the private sector of the country. The Macedonian economy depends on outside sources for all of its oil and gas and most of its modern machinery and parts. An important supplement of GDP is the remittances from thousands of Macedonians working in Germany and other West European nations.
