Landlocked Malawi ranks among the world's least developed countries. The economy is predominately agricultural with about 85% of the population living in rural areas. Agriculture accounts for 45% of GDP and 90% of export revenues. It is dependent for most of its income on the export sales of tobacco, tea and sugar .Other agricultural products include peanuts, coffee, and wood products. The economy depends on substantial inflows of economic assistance from the IMF the World Bank and individual donor nations. The government faces strong challenges, including developing a market economy, improving educational facilities and facing up to environmental problems.
