Mata economy is dependent on foreign trade, manufacturing (especially electronics and textiles) and tourism. Malta is not blessed with natural sources or with its own sources of energy .Its major resources are limestone, a favorable geographic location, and a productive labour force. Malta produces only about 20% of its food needs, is import dependent. Currently there are several privatized state-controlled firms as well as liberalizing markets that are running their operations successfully to prepare for membership in the European Union. The major industries that contribute to Malta economy are ship building and repair, food and beverages, shoes, toys, electronics, information and communications, construction business and jewelry.
