India’s cities are expanding on a larger scale and at a faster pace than ever before. The report projects that the country’s urban population will soar to 590 million in2030, from 340 millionin2008. Indian cities over the next two decades will also house 40 percent of the country’s population. To cater to this growth, India needs to invest $1.2 trillion in capital expenditure, mainly building infrastructure, over that period, an eight-fold increase of current spending levels. India now spends $17 per capita on urban infrastructure, compared to rival China's $116.
