Australia : Country Liberals invest in the future of education in the Territory

Publish Date : 26-Feb-2015

The Northern Territory Open Education Centre (NTOEC) is a step closer, with the construction tender for the project going out this week. Minister for Education Peter Chandler said the NTOEC is a major investment in the future of education in the Territory. “The $11.6 million dollar purpose-built facility will offer a senior secondary distance education school which caters for years’ 10 to 12,” Minister Chandler said. “It will provide flexible distance study options for more than 600 students across the Northern Territory, with plans to expand its use in both the Territory and Asia.

“The NTOEC will offer state of the art premises and technology to meet the specialist education needs of senior secondary students accessing learning through distance,” he said. The INPEX operated Ichthys LNG project is contributing $3.3 million to the project as part of its $91 million package of social and environmental programs to support the local community. $300,000 of the funding will support remote skills training packages and skills training delivered by the NTOEC in remote communities.

Minister Chandler thanked INPEX for its contribution and said the NTOEC will be built on the grounds of Darwin High School, as part of the Bullocky Point Education Precinct. “We’re looking at a 2100msq, three storey building with design by leading consultants which draws on best practice from other areas of Australia and New Zealand,” Minister Chandler said. “The Country Liberals Government is committed to ensuring students across the Territory have access to the highest quality education and this project is just another example of that commitment.” Construction on the NTOEC is expected to start in May 2015, with completion mid-2016.
