United Kingdom : GATEWIT - Political parties make increased SME participation in WHITEHALL procurement key plank of election platforms

Publish Date : 21-Apr-2015

CEO of e-procurement expert Gatewit, Pedro Paulo, says that although enhanced SME participation in Whitehall procurement has been made by political parties a key plank of their election platforms, the way they plan on working with current and forthcoming regulations to achieve this is yet not clear. Without having to quote statistics, any person with business experience can say that it is better when more prospects to sell exist.

Unlocking access to new and varied markets, along with a reorganization of contract structures that earlier served as a hurdle to entry to smaller enterprises, are a major support to allowing smaller businesses to compete on a large scale.

This is a thing that has hit the headlines recently not just in more specialised press with the Public Contracts Regulations 2015, but countrywide as public service procurement become a major topic in the election platforms of the main British political parties.

Not only the Conservative but also the Labour parties have made enhanced SME participation in state procurement a key plank of their respective election platforms. It is still to be seen how the parties plan on working with current and forthcoming rules to ensure this. However, the focus does show a positive cross-party campaign for reforming procurement and promoting smaller enterprise involvement.
