Bahrain : BAHRAIN's energy bid includes provision of desalination water

Publish Date : 25-Apr-2015

A consortium, including Saudi-owned infrastructure firm ACWA Power, in its bid for Bahrain's 390,000 tonne a year waste-to-energy plant has the provision of desalinated water.

The Beatona consortium featuring Spanish infrastructure firm, FCC has forwarded a tender offer to the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning on a build own transfer basis under a 25-year public-private partnership concession.

According to the ministry, four proposals had been submitted, of which one includes a "waste to water facility which can provide the Kingdom of Bahrain with Desalinated Water utilising a renewable and sustainable source of energy in the process".

The desalination aspect included in the consortium's bid would prove to be very interesting in the region as it faces water scarcity. Already, ACWA Power supplies some 2.4 million mł/day of desalinated water to the region.
