SOUTHWEST AIRLINES awards contract to HONEYWELL AEROSPACE to upgrade 737NG avionics

Publish Date : 05-May-2015

US low-cost carrier (LCC) Southwest Airlines has awarded a contract to Honeywell Aerospace to retrofit a suite of avionics systems on its fleet of 737NG aircraft, and also to supply the equipment for the 30 737 MAX aircraft which it has on order.

Honeywell Aerospace will be responsible to provide safety, communication and navigation systems, to include its new Integrated Multi-Mode Receiver (IMMR), which the OEM says is the industry’s first “all-digital navigation receiver that integrates multiple regulatory requirements into a single receiver”.

According to Honeywell, the IMMR will offer a 50 per cent weight saving compared with current solutions.

Southwest is the first airline to install the IMMR. Other upgrades includes Honeywell’s SmartTraffic traffic collision avoidance system, its IntuVue RDR-4000 3D weather radar and its Aspire satellite communications system.

Southwest Airlines claims this upgrade will ensure its aircraft meet upcoming “NextGen” navigation and communication regulations from the FAA.
