United States : Mace selected as preferred bidder by EDF Energy for works at Hinkley Point C nuclear power station

Publish Date : 03-Aug-2015

Mace has been selected as the preferred bidder by EDF Energy to oversee commercial and contract management services for civil, industrial and nuclear works at the proposed Hinkley Point C (HPC) power plant, as well as project and construction management services for major off-site works.

The planned power station at Hinkley Point on the northern Somerset coast will usher in a new generation of UK nuclear power stations aimed at revitalising the UK’s nuclear power industry. Once completed, it will provide a clean, secure and affordable source of electricity for around five million homes, meeting approximately 7% of the UK’s electricity needs.

Mace’s works will include supporting contract management, the construction of three freight management facilities, four park and ride facilities and induction building, local highway improvements and three accommodation campuses for more than 1,500 workers.

Throughout the construction phase, Mace and EDF Energy are committed to providing significant employment opportunities to the local community. Mace estimates up to 80% of its labour force will be local by providing apprenticeships to young local people and recruiting graduates from local universities. In addition, Mace intends to build its locally based project and commercial management team through further local recruitment, blended with support from experienced Mace staff. This will enable Mace to provide similar services to other nuclear and major infrastructure clients as their planned programmes come to fruition.

Mace has now entered a period of contract clarification with EDF Energy. The contract will only be finalised once this is completed and a final investment decision has been made by EDF Energy to proceed with the HPC project.

Mace has previously supported EDF Energy’s proposed Hinkley Point C power station through delivery of the off-site works, project management, project controls, commercial management and procurement services.

Jason Millett, Mace’s COO for Major Programmes and Infrastructure, said: “This is a defining project for the UK’s energy sector and we are very proud to have been selected as preferred bidder by EDF Energy. We look forward to supporting the local community through jobs and investment and building on the relationship we have established with EDF Energy over the last four years.”
