Australia : TRC introduces new online supplier, contractor management portal

Publish Date : 28-Sep-2016

Toowoomba Regional Council has taken another step in supporting local businesses to become better equipped to participate in public sector procurement processes.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio today unveiled an innovative supplier and contractor management system to provide an easier way for local businesses to register their interest online for supplying goods and services to Council.

This new system will enable suppliers already registered with Council to update their information, including contact details, insurance details and relevant licences online, Mayor Antonio said.

We are hoping the simplicity of this system will encourage new businesses to throw their hats into the ring to secure Council business.

Sourcing goods and services locally is crucial to the business community in Toowoomba and Council is committed to spending locally to help local businesses grow and prosper.

Mayor Antonio said the new system would allow suppliers to go online to update the details of employees who attended Council worksites.

This will enable contractors to undergo general and site specific inductions online before setting foot on a Council worksite, which is part of Councils ongoing commitment to workplace health and safety, he said.

The system also has the capability to send automated reminders when licences or qualifications are due to expire, which will result in efficiencies for work places and Council.

Mayor Antonio said there had been a concerted effort from Council to engage with industry leaders and business representatives to help local suppliers win more business from Council.

The ratepayer and the community as a whole are the ultimate winners in any streamlined or modified policies in this area. As our economy grows, so too do job opportunities, and that flows on to greater spending power for businesses and individuals, he said.

Sourcing and implementing new systems like this should promote greater levels of local supplier participation and involvement in the procurement process. This could be the opportunity that helps local companies engage more fully with Council.

This system is designed to be user-friendly and enables businesses to follow a simple, step-by-step process to enter and update their details online. Hopefully this will give local businesses, which may not have tendered for Council projects previously, the confidence to enter into the process.

Council purchases goods, services and works across a range of areas including roads, footpaths, recreational and community facilities, parks and trees to heavy vehicles, office equipment, professional services, utilities and more.
