United States : UPS plans to invest $18m in solar power projects in 2017

UPS has made an announcement on its investment strategy worth about $18 million for this year to set up new onsite solar photovoltaic (PV) projects across the United States.

The company is optimistic of accomplishing these PV projects by the 2017-end.

UPS will be able to achieve an almost five-fold increase in the overall onsite solar energy production capacity of the company through the installation of 26,000 solar panels.

The shipping giants new projects will produce overall clean energy of 10MW, which will be sufficient to power about 1,200 homes per year.

The company has also claimed that it will be able to offset carbon dioxide emissions of about 8,200 metric tonnes per annum with these new green electricity projects.

The Fortune 500 companies are growingly moving towards renewable sources energy in order to save energy expenses, and UPS is no exception.

Launch of renewable energy schemes by more than half of the Fortune 100 companies led to the overall savings of $1.1 billion in energy expenditure as early as 2014.

Since 2004, UPS has been engaged in the establishment of the solar energy systems and it has already set up solar panels to several of its US facilities, in addition to the companys investments of over $750 million into alternative fuel, fuelling stations and advanced-technology vehicle segments.

The Fortune 500 company has asserted that its renewable energy program has helped it to save almost $200 million in the year 2014.

The UPS Director (Facilities Procurement) Bill Moir commented, "Solar technology is a proven way to effectively and efficiently provide long-term power to our facilities. We have a significant number of facilities that are well positioned to deploy solar at scale and increase our sustainable energy options for our buildings and electric vehicles."

The establishment of the 26,000 solar panels will facilitate every facility of the parcel giant to meet half of their daily demand for energy in a sustainable way.

UPS, apart from its investments into onsite solar energy space, has also been making significant amount of investment in the electric vehicle sector, comprising e-vans, as well as trucks and trikes.
